White House Race Outcome May Be Known Within Hours Or Take Days

Remember that the electoral college votes won determine the outcome of the US presidential election, not the number of national votes.

How soon will former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris find out their fate? The US 2024 election will conclude in three time zones, beginning with the East Coast on Tuesday, November 5.

As in 2016, it might be a few hours, perhaps by the morning of November 6. Voting ended on November 8th evening, and by 2:30 am on November 9th, Trump had won battleground Wisconsin and its 10 electoral college votes, surpassing the crucial 270-vote threshold. Five minutes later, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had called to offer her congratulations.

However, it might take longer. Polling ended on November 3rd, 2020, but Pennsylvania did not give President Joe Biden its 20 electoral college votes and the presidency until November 7th. With voting ending on November 7 and the state’s outcome known on December 12, the 2000 election may hold the record for the most delayed outcome, as the nation waited over a month to elect George W. Bush as its next president.

Remember that the electoral college votes won determine the outcome of the US presidential election, not the number of national votes. Trump and Harris must receive at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes to win. Each state sends two senators and representatives to the US House of Representatives, and the total number of electoral college votes each state receives is equal to that number.

States, counties within a state, and occasionally even cities within the same county may have different polling closing times. No matter how long it takes, whoever is in queue will cast their ballot if polling closes at eight. Over 55 million registered voters have already cast their ballots in person at polling places or by mail as part of the ongoing early voting period.
