According to reports, iOS 18.2 will enable users to “trust” a new computer without having to enter their passcode. Apple released the second developer beta version of iOS earlier this week, with the next update anticipated to arrive in December. The company is anticipated to release additional features with the iOS 18.2 update next month, in contrast to iOS 18.1, which primarily added support for a few Apple Intelligence features on qualified iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers. These features include the ability to change focus and exposure lock on the Camera Control button and to share the location of misplaced items with trusted individuals.
iOS 18.2 Will Enable Users to Trust New Computers with iPhone Face ID
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user Aaron Perris, Apple’s security feature that requires users to enter their PIN, passcode, or password to “trust” a new computer will soon become much easier to use (via 9to5Mac). Following Face ID authentication, Apple will permit users to grant a new computer access to the device’s data.
It is important to note that the new feature is only available to beta testers at this time; users should be able to access it next month. The “Trust This Computer” feature, which allows users to select which devices can access their phone’s data, was added to the iPhone by Apple more than a decade ago.
According to Apple’s support document, if a user decides not to trust a computer, they will be prompted each time they connect their phone to that device. This also applies to iPhones running iOS 16 or later that are connected to trusted computers that have local backup (rather than iCloud backup) enabled.
Additional iOS 18.2 Features Are Anticipated in December
New Apple Intelligence features that are already accessible to beta testers are anticipated to be included in iOS 18.2 when it is released to the general public next month. These include ChatGPT (and ChatGPT Plus) support, Genmoji, the Image Playground feature, and the new Visual Intelligence (iPhone 16 models). The Notes app will also receive some AI-backed enhancements. After the release of iOS 18.1 last month, which included support for Writing Tools and AI-powered Focus modes, this is the second wave of Apple Intelligence features.
Sharing the location of misplaced items on Find My with airlines or other trusted individuals will also be supported by the iOS 18,2 update for users who are less concerned about AI features or who do not own a device that is compatible with Apple Intelligence. Additionally, the iPhone 16 series’ Camera Control will be improved with the addition of focus and exposure lock controls. On iOS 18.2, the app icons displayed in the Settings app will also correspond to the tint that is chosen on the Home Screen.
