Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies Beat England To Enter Semi-Finals

At the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Hayley Matthews’ team advanced from Group B alongside South Africa after defeating England by six wickets.

After defeating England by six wickets, Hayley Matthews’ team and South Africa advanced from Group B at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. In a furious assault against a target of 142, Hayley Matthews (50) and Qiana Joseph (52) both scored half-centuries. With two overs remaining, England missed a number of opportunities, and their four wickets came too late to stop the West Indies from winning. With a brilliant performance, Nat Sciver-Brunt had earlier set the West Indies a target of 142. As England dropped to 34/3, Deandra Dottin was the standout player on the pitch.

But Sciver-Brunt spearheaded an incredible comeback, leading her team to 141/7 with an undefeated 57 off 50 balls.

Dottin contributed 1/16 in three overs, three catches, and a run-out, while Afy Fletcher was the best bowler for the West Indies, taking 3/21.

Another setback for England came when captain Heather Knight was sidelined for the second inning due to a calf injury. All she could do was watch her team fall apart.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. She quickly made an impression, dismissing the dangerous Danni Wyatt-Hodge (16 from 12), ending England’s opening team’s strong start.

Dottin, who had just been moved into position, brilliantly caught Wyatt-Hodge in the ring, and there were celebrations that suggested the dismissal was a calculated tactical move.

After some misunderstandings between the batters, Dottin was involved once more as England ended the powerplay at 34/2, running out Alice Capsey (1).

England continued to attack despite losing early wickets. England needs to rebuild after Maia Bouchier, trying to maintain the aggressive approach, skied a catch to Qiana Joseph, ending her promising 14-from-19 knock.

With Knight playing the aggressive role and Sciver-Brunt serving as the steady anchor, the middle-over partnership between Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt changed the course of the match.

Replays showed that a not-out call could have been reversed, which was fortunate for England but the West Indies had no more reviews.

Before Knight (21* from 13) was forced to retire due to injury, the pair added 46. This was a worrying development for England.

Although they were unable to make a significant contribution, Sciver-Brunt received support from the middle and lower orders of England. At a run-a-ball, Amy Jones (7), Danielle Gibson (7), and Charlie Dean (5) all scored runs. Sophie Ecclestone, who hit the team’s only six and scored seven out of four, was also dismissed after Dottin caught her.

England reached 141/7 in their 20 overs, a target that was insufficient against a strong West Indies team, primarily due to Sciver-Brunt’s half-century.
