Windows 11 Insider Preview Adds Updated Prism Emulator for Arm PCs to Let Users Run Legacy Apps

The updated Prism emulator will support the following extensions: AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, F16C, and others.

Microsoft unveiled two major updates in the most recent Windows 11 Insider Preview, which was broadcast on the Canary channel on Wednesday. The biggest inclusion is an update to the Prism emulator for Arm PCs, which brings support for additional extensions to devices running Windows 11 on Arm-based chipsets. With this, these devices will be able to run more legacy apps and games, as well as the latest Adobe Premiere Pro 2025. Alongside, the update has also introduced a new on-screen gamepad keyboard.

The Prism emulator for Windows 11 Insider Preview has been updated.

In its Windows Insider blog post, Microsoft announced the release of the Windows 11 Insider Preview build 27744. The updated Prism emulator enables the use of incompatible apps and games on laptops and desktops with Arm chipsets, like the Snapdragon X series.

Microsoft claims that by supporting more CPU features under emulation, the updated Prism will be able to run “more 64-bit x86 (x64) applications.” This implies that legacy games and software like Adobe Premiere Pro 2025 will now function on these devices.

AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, F16C, and other recently added CPU extensions are included with this version of the emulator. Although these extensions are not required to run Windows, the tech giant pointed out that some apps now assume that devices will support them because they are so widespread. Notably, these new CPU features will only be available to x64 applications during preview.

In addition, Microsoft’s Windows 11 Insider Preview features a new on-screen gamepad keyboard layout. It supports the ability to utilise the users’ Xbox controller to navigate as well as type. In addition, the keyboard features a vertical alignment for improved controller navigation and button accelerators.

The latest version of Windows 11 also fixes a number of bugs and glitches. Task Manager’s Disconnect and Logoff dialogue now has text scaling and dark mode support. Another problem that caused the display to appear as a black screen on PCs with older Nvidia GPUs has also been resolved.
