Jimmy Kimmel, an American comedian and talk show host who typically finds the humorous side of things, was unable to smile on the day that Donald Trump was elected president of the United States for the second time. During the opening monologue of his hour-long ABC show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the well-known TV host broke down in tears.
Described as “a terrible night, last night,” Mr. Kimmel, who was clearly upset and dejected by Donald Trump’s electoral victory, claimed that despite his best efforts, he was unable to find any silver linings in the outcome of the US election.
“To be honest, last night was a horrible night. He said, momentarily choking on emotion, “It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country great,” as the live audience cheered him on.
After choking up once more, Mr. Kimmel continued, saying, “…terrible for healthcare, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech… a terrible night for poor people, for the middle-class, for senior citizens, for social security… for our allies in Ukraine.” He added, “For NATO, for the truth… terrible night for democracy, and for decency, and for everyone who voted against him… but guess what? It was a bad night for anyone who voted for him too—you just do not realise it yet…”
“And most of all, it was an absolute disaster of a night for Melania,” Mr. Kimmel said, as the audience erupted in laughter. He was standing in front of a backdrop that depicted a typical American cityscape in complete darkness.
Prior to concluding his monologue with “the only positive thing I could find,” he had gathered enough momentum to mock President-elect Trump from his platform.
“Perhaps in the future, we as a people will realise that perhaps this is what we all needed to wake up to. Perhaps the only bright spot from this is that he will not be able to run for president again in 2028, which is a good thing for those who care about him so much.
Stephen Colbert, the host of the CBS Late Show and another well-known talk show host and comedian, also discussed Trump’s win. With a clever retort, he responded to the criticism that Donald Trump is a good source of news or comedy.
He added, “Nobody tells the guy who cleans the bathroom, ‘Wow, you must love it when someone has explosive diarrhoea coz there is so much material for you to work with'” to the laughter and snicker of the audience. “As a late night host, people often say to me ‘C’mon…part of you would want Trump to win, because he gives you so much material to work with’…. well, no,” he said.
When he said, “The first time Donald Trump was elected, he started off as a joke and ended up as a tragedy. This time he is starting off as a tragedy; who knows how he will end up… maybe a limerick?,” he left the audience in stitches. “Damn it!” once said a man who was orange.
“Who knows what the next four years are going to be like?” Mr. Colbert asked, summarising the laughter that was still reverberating throughout the studio.
