Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the State Department, reiterated the United States’ call for a negotiated end to the Gaza war, which started with the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, but he refrained from declaring any immediate actions against Israel.
Concerned by a “horrifying” Israeli strike in Gaza that claimed many children’s lives, the United States said Tuesday it was seeking explanations from its ally.
“The number of civilian casualties in this incident is extremely concerning to us. In reference to “reports of two dozen children killed” in the bombing that destroyed the five-story block in Beit Lahia, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, “This was a horrifying incident with a horrifying result.”
Miller stated, “We have contacted the Israeli government to enquire about the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
Miller reiterated a US call for a negotiated end to the Gaza war, which started with the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, but he refrained from announcing any immediate actions against Israel, which depends on US military and diplomatic support.
The most recent strike’s “tragic cost to civilians” “is another reminder of why we need to see into this war,” Miller stated.
A year into the Israeli government’s military campaign in Gaza, Miller stated, “Israel has destroyed Hamas’s leadership, destroyed Hamas’s military capabilities, and through its military action ensured that Hamas cannot repeat the attacks of October 7.”
