Since India’s 0-3 loss to New Zealand in the home Test series, Gautam Gambhir and his support team have been the subject of some difficult questions.
There is already a lot of debate about Team India’s future under the recently hired head coach, Gautam Gambhir. The credentials of Gambhir and his support staff are being questioned following the 0-3 home Test series loss to New Zealand. India legend Sunil Gavaskar found the ambiguity in India’s coaching structure amusing as the rumours about Team India’s preparations for the Australia tour grew.
Gavaskar acknowledged in an interview that he did not understand the current coaching team configuration. The batting icon wondered as he asked what Abhishek Nayar’s designation is in the coaching team. The role that Ryan Ten Doeschate plays is also unclear.
Gavaskar found it difficult to contain his laughter when he was informed that Ryan and Abhishek both serve as assistant coaches and batting coaches. Gavaskar, who has scored more runs in his career than Nayar and Ten Doeschate combined, then urged Gambhir to take the initiative and help Indian batters better understand the difficulties in Australia.
“What is Abhishek Nayar’s contribution to the team in terms of batting? Is he an assistant coach or a batting coach? Gambhir has scored a lot more runs than the two, so if he can step in and guide the players on how to bat in Australian conditions and the type of approach they should take, then we can probably perform better,” Gavaskar said during a chat on Sports Tak.
Additionally, Gavaskar gave Gambhir a direct warning, stating that his honeymoon period was over and that he now needed to produce the outcomes that had led to his hiring.
“Gautam Gambhir’s honeymoon period is over. Although we are prone to overlook the errors committed during this time, Gavaskar stated, “We now want him to take over and lead the players appropriately during the tour of Australia.”
Experts and former cricket players have openly questioned some of Gambhir’s choices. The opening batsman’s future as head coach may depend on how the Indian squad performs in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
