MS Dhoni’s IPL Decision Confirmed As CSK Make Surprise No. 1 Retention Choice: Report

CSK are reportedly set to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player ahead of IPL 2025 auction. But the franchise’s top pick is what has shocked people.

With a subliminal hint about his involvement in the T20 league, the great MS Dhoni virtually assured everyone that he would continue to play cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL). When asked for their response, Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), added that they were pleased to see Dhoni prepared for another IPL season. Dhoni then calls N Srinivasan, the franchise owner, to finalise the retention list in advance of the 2025 IPL season.

However, it has also been reported that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who left T20 internationals following India’s T20 World Cup victory this year, is CSK’s top retention pick rather than captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“What else do we want when he is ready? We are happy,” franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

Dhoni had stated at a function that he wanted to relish the remaining years of cricket in his life.

Dhoni was cited as saying, “I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play,” It is hard to enjoy cricket as a game when you play it like a professional sport. I am interested in doing that. It is not simple.

“The emotions keep coming; the commitments are there. For the upcoming years, I hope to continue enjoying the game. In order to play in the IPL for two and a half months, I must maintain my fitness for nine months. You need to make a plan, but you should also relax.”

Ravindra Jadeja is ranked number two on CSK’s retention list, followed by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and pacer Matheesha Pathirana has consented to be the number three pick. Samir Rizvi, Devon Conway, and Shivam Dube are two players that the team is probably going to keep.
