IPL 2025 retention deadline date and time; what to expect on Oct 31 at 5 PM

In anticipation of the IPL 2025 mega auction, which is set for the last week of November, teams are almost done with their calculations and selections for their squads. The deadline day for all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) teams to submit their retention lists has arrived. Fans will find out which of their favourite players will be up for grabs in the subsequent mega auction at 5 PM IST on October 31.

How much money can a team spend on keeping players?

When the IPL 2025 mega auction is approaching, how many players can a team keep?

Teams are permitted to retain up to six players from their 2024 squad prior to the 2025 mega auction, including a maximum of five capped players (Indian or foreign) and two uncapped Indian players. The IPL’s maximum retention cap of six players allows teams to retain their core roster.

Each franchise has a total purse of Rs 120 crore—a 20 percent increase over last year—to assemble their squad for IPL 2025. Retaining players comes with fixed deductions: Rs 18 crore for the first player, Rs 14 crore for the second, Rs 11 crore for the third, Rs 18 crore again for the fourth, and Rs 14 crore again for the fifth retained player. Retaining each uncapped Indian player deducts Rs 4 crore.

As a result, keeping five capped players would cut a team’s overall revenue of Rs 120 crore by at least Rs 75 crore. Thus, retaining five capped players would reduce a team’s purse by at least Rs 75 crore from the total Rs 120 crore.

How can teams distribute Rs 75 crore among the retained players?

The IPL has instructed teams that they have the right to distribute the Rs 75 crore as they wish if they are retaining five players.

A team’s purse will drop by at least Rs 18 crore if they only keep one capped player. A minimum deduction of Rs 32 crore (18+14) is made for keeping two capped players; the exact amount will depend on the retention payment. The deduction would be at least Rs 61 crore (18+14+11+18) for four players and at least Rs 43 crore (18+14+11) for three capped players.

The entire Rs 75 crore deduction (18+14+11+18+14) can be divided among the players in a variety of ways if a team decides to keep five capped players. For example, if both parties agree and the total deductions stay within the Rs 75 crore limit, the first player may be retained at Rs 23 crore while the fifth player may be retained for less than the usual Rs 14 crore deduction.

The case of SRH, the finalists from the previous year, provides an illustration of this flexibility, as they are probably going to pay a substantial Rs 23 crore to keep HeRsich Klassen. If a team wants to keep five players, they will need to figure out how much each player will cost. In addition, teams can choose to use the right-to-match card rather than keeping five players.

What is Right to Match?

The Right to Match (RTM) card allows teams another chance to reacquire their players at the mega auction if they choose not to retain them beforehand. Teams retaining fewer than six players by October 31 will have RTM options available at the auction. For example, if a team retains only three players, they will have three RTM options at the auction. A team with no retained players will enter the auction with six RTM options, while a team that retains six players will have no RTM options.

Furthermore, a team’s remaining RTM can only be used to repurchase an uncapped player if they have kept five capped players. Furthermore, a team that has already kept two uncapped players at the auction is not permitted to use an RTM on any more uncapped players.

How can teams utilise the auction’s right-to-match option?

If an IPL 2024 player is acquired by another team, his former team may use the Right to Match (RTM) option to re-acquire him by matching the highest bid in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The RTM rule as it was used in the 2018 mega auction has changed, though. The franchise with the winning bid may now increase their bid to any desired amount if a team exercises RTM. If the player’s previous team still wants to keep him, they would then have to match this new offer.

Is a player able to turn down a retention offer?

Indeed, a player has the option to turn down a retention offer and put himself up for auction if he so chooses. Furthermore, from the day of the retention deadline (October 31) until the start of the IPL 2025 season, no player trades will be permitted.
