Imane Khelif, a boxer who won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, is a “biological male,” according to a leaked medical report.
Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, is making headlines once more. Many have suggested that the pugilist is in fact a “biological male” based on her “leaked” medical report, which indicated the presence of ambiguous genitalia and secondary male characteristics. Imane Khelif had internal testicles and an XY chromosome makeup, which point to a 5-alpha reductase deficiency, according to a report by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia. Following the report’s release, IBA President Umar Kremlev called on International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach to issue an apology for permitting a “man” to compete against women at the Olympic Games in Paris.
The IOC and the international boxing body have been at odds over Imane Khelif and other boxers with comparable conditions. Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei were permitted to compete in the Olympic Games by the IOC despite the IBA’s ban on them.
A leaked medical report that appeared in Le Correspondent seems to have backed up the IBA’s conclusions about Khelif and Yu-ting, starting a new ward war between Bach and the boxing organisation’s head.A leaked medical report that appeared in Le Correspondent seems to have backed up the IBA’s conclusions about Khelif and Yu-ting, starting a new ward war between Bach and the boxing organisation’s head.
IBA chief Umar Kremlev has once again attacked Bach, calling on his IOC counterpart to “kneel and apologise” following the release of the leaked medical report.
“Everyone already knows the news. The International Olympic Committee has violated all sports regulations by matching a man against a woman. Imane Khelif is a man, according to tests once more. As the president of the International Boxing Association, which promotes gender equality and defends boxing for both men and women, I demand today that Thomas Bach and his team issue a verbal and written apology to the boxing community around the world.
Thomas Bach is directly to blame for this since he personally pushed for men to be able to compete against women. I demand that they kneel and offer an apology to the boxing community and the girls who have been beaten and mistreated on behalf of all boxers worldwide. I, along with the rest of the IBA, am now waiting for your formal apology, Thomas Bach,” Kremlev said.
Since the medical report was made public on social media, a number of celebrities, both athletes and non-athletes, have expressed their opinions online, with the majority of them supporting the IBA.
