Baidu Unveils Xiaodu AI Glasses with a 16 Megapixel Ultra-Wide-Angle Camera

Real-time conversations and object recognition are among the AI features supported by the recently released Xiaodu AI Glasses.

On Tuesday, Baidu made its Xiaodu AI Glasses available in China. According to reports, the Chinese tech giant’s AI-integrated smart glasses, which were initially introduced in China, have an AI assistant that can assist users with a range of tasks. The Xiaodu AI Glasses are said to have a 16-megapixel ultrawide camera and a four-microphone array. They are 45 g in weight. Baidu has used its own large language models (LLMs) for the wearable technology, and the Xiaodu AI glasses’ price has not yet been revealed.

Unveiling Baidu’s Xiaodu AI Glasses

At the 2024 Baidu World Conference, the tech giant unveiled the Xiaodu AI glasses (viaGizmochina) which are equipped with a Chinese language model developed by the company. Baidu intends to use its product line to take on the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and profit from the expanding market for artificial intelligence-powered wearable technology.

The weight of the Xiaodu AI Glasses is 45 g. They have a four-microphone array and a 16-megapixel ultrawide camera. The company claims that the native AI assistant receives information in both visual and aural modalities using the camera and microphone.

According to Baidu, the AI assistant can answer queries in real time — a feature the company calls “walk-and-ask queries”. Additionally, the glasses can be used for intelligent reminders, audio-visual translation, object identification, and calorie recognition.

The battery life of Baidu’s AI Glasses is 56 hours of standby time and up to five hours of calling and playback time. It is estimated that it takes them roughly half an hour to fully charge.

The DuerOS AI operating system, which powers the Xiaodu AI glasses, will also support Baidu Maps and Baike, among other Baidu platforms. The ultimate objective seems to be developing a gadget that can be improved even more by incorporating the Baidu ecosystem.
