Realme Patent Describes Foldable Device With Magnetic Components for One-Hand Operation

The foldable phone from Realme might have magnetic parts that run the length of the phone’s frame, making it simple to open with one hand.

According to a patent document on China’s patent and trademark website, Realme may be developing a new gadget with a foldable screen. According to reports, the alleged foldable has magnetic components that could enable one-handed folding and unfolding. According to reports, the book-style foldable has two frames joined by a hinge. The company may utilise the patent’s technology for smartphones and other consumer electronics devices.

The Realme Patent Teases a Foldable Device with Magnetic Elements

Realme may be developing a new device with a foldable screen that could be used to create gadgets like a smartphone, tablet, or portable gaming computer, per a patent document discovered by 91Mobiles on the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The patent was granted in March 2024, less than a year after it was filed in July 2023.

According to the patent described in the document, the alleged Realme foldable will have magnetic components that can attract or repel one another, facilitating one-handed opening and closing. By turning on or off the magnetic field, a control device will determine whether the magnets on either panel are drawn to one another.

In order to control the movement of the magnetic element, the company’s patent document suggests that the first magnetic element should be able to slide along the axis of the hinge. The first magnetic element would be moved by a drive unit, which would be controlled by a control unit that would wait for user commands.

While the technology in the patent document suggests that a foldable phone with magnetic technology could make using a larger device easier, it’s worth keeping in mind that Realme CMO Francis Wong reportedly stated earlier this year that the company was hitting the brakes on its efforts to launch a foldable phone due to factors such as durability and cost effectiveness. Therefore, it may take several years before the company releases the technology outlined in this patent.
